Jakarta, Pintu News – The Canadian government recently proposed a total ban on political donations using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin , Ethereum , and Ripple . The move comes in response to growing concerns of potential foreign interference in elections through hard-to-trace digital transactions.
The bill, titled the Strong and Free Elections Act, targets any form of anonymous donations that could potentially threaten the integrity of democracy. This proposal marks a new chapter in the Canadian government’s efforts to maintain the security and transparency of the electoral process.
The Canadian government believes that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Pepe Coin (PEPE) can be used by foreigners to infiltrate the national political system. The blockchain technology underlying cryptocurrencies offers anonymity and ease of cross-border transfers, opening the door for overseas donors to influence election results.
Steven MacKinnon, House Leader of the Canadian government, emphasized that this step was taken to maintain electoral sovereignty and fairness in the country. He added that the government will also strengthen coordination and investment to counter any threats to democracy. Not only Canada, similar concerns also arise in other countries such as the UK.
The UK government has even announced a moratorium on crypto-based political donations after conducting an independent study and coming under pressure from a number of senior politicians. This phenomenon shows that the issue of cybersecurity and transparency of political funds is now a global concern. Developed countries are competing to tighten regulations to prevent manipulation of election results by irresponsible parties.

The attempt to ban crypto-based political donations in Canada is not new. In 2024, Dominic LeBlanc, who was then the Minister of Public Safety, had proposed a similar bill. However, the proposal failed to pass the second reading in the House of Commons and eventually died before becoming law.
This shows that the legislative process regarding crypto and political issues in Canada still faces major challenges. Since 2019, political donations using digital assets such as Solana (SOL), Tether and Dogecoin have been permitted in Canada and are treated like property donations.
However, a recent report by the Chief Electoral Officer, Stéphane Perrault, recommends a total ban on crypto donations due to the difficulty of identifying the identity of donors. According to Perrault, transparency and accountability of political funds are at stake in maintaining public trust in the democratic process. This recommendation eventually became a strong basis for the government to reintroduce a ban on crypto donations.

If the Strong and Free Elections Act is passed into law, political parties and third parties that receive donations through prohibited methods such as crypto, money orders, or prepaid cards will be required to return, destroy, or surrender the funds to the Chief Elections Officer.
These rules are designed to close all loopholes that allow illicit funds to enter the Canadian political system. The government is also preparing strict sanctions for violators, both individuals and corporations. For individuals in violation, the maximum fine that can be imposed is double the amount of donations received, plus CA$25,000 ($18,000).
As for corporate entities, fines can reach CA$100,000 ($72,000) excluding refunds. These heavy sanctions are expected to have a deterrent effect and ensure that the entire political funding process is transparent. Thus, the integrity of Canadian elections can be maintained from the threat of foreign intervention and corrupt practices.
The Canadian government’s bold move to propose a ban on crypto-based political donations marks a serious commitment to safeguarding democracy from the threats of the digital age. With stricter regulations, it is expected that the electoral process in Canada will be more transparent and free from foreign influence. However, the challenges of implementing and monitoring these new rules remain to be resolved. The world is now waiting to see if Canada will be a pioneer in regulating political donations in the crypto era.
